First weekly report of 2023, and also my first weekly report (literally, I have never written a weekly report since I started working, grateful for being part of a relatively free team).
Learning#
English#
- Keep memorizing vocabulary, aiming for 50 new words per day along with reviewing using the "Don't Memorize Words" app.
Technology#
- Continue reading "Ginkgo Book" as building a solid foundation is crucial, and it's time to make up for the time I wasted not studying properly. Finished reading Chapter 4 this week.
- Getting started with Rust again. However, it feels much easier this time, probably because of the previous attempts. Rust is quite interesting, and I'm mainly learning through "The Rust Programming Language" book. Finished 2/3 of the introductory chapters this week, and I believe I can complete both the introductory and practical chapters next week.
- Practice coding problems. None this week. I wasn't in the best state of mind, and my body chose to focus on Rust, which I found more interesting. Considering that coding problems are still an important part of interviews, and personally, I don't dislike them, I will keep this section as a reminder.
- Open-source projects. None this week. I will keep this section until I am capable of contributing to open-source projects.
Work#
- About to enter a relatively new field. The feedback from my work over the past year has been good, and I hope to have a smooth experience in this new field as well.
- Still dealing with the issues, finishing touches, and promotion of my previous work. Hopefully, there won't be too many problems.
Life#
- This week was uneventful, as I constantly had a stuffy nose, affecting my overall well-being. Health, oh health, you are the foundation of everything.
- History: Continuing to read "A Penguin History of Europe: Pursuit of Glory: Europe 1648-1815."
- Recreation: Started rewatching "Silicon Valley," but haven't finished yet. When will I be as successful as Richard? Before bed, I'll read a bit of "Lord of the Mysteries."
- Behavioral practice: Reread Chapter 1 of "Fogg Behavior Model."
- Planning to research investments, but haven't started yet. After almost two years of work, I have accumulated some savings. The average interest rate of the money market funds I hold is above 2%. Considering the effort I put into research, I believe a 5% return on a small amount of money should not pose significant risks. Taking into account the need for some liquid funds for unexpected expenses (and impulsive spending), a 3% difference in return would bring an additional income of 12,000 yuan per year, while also accumulating experience for future financial management. It's definitely worth spending two weekends to study systematically.
Some Thoughts#
Recently, I have been thinking about the purpose of work and summarized it hierarchically as follows:
- Obtain cash flow.
- Gain practical application of technology.
- Make connections with outstanding friends.
- Learn new technologies.
It's also the performance evaluation season for some companies, and there are friends who have good and poor evaluations, but that's okay. Performance evaluation is just a management tool, and what matters is whether you are responsible for yourself. For friends with good evaluations, no need to say much, but I also know friends who didn't perform well and after talking to me, had these thoughts:
Poor evaluation but agree with the evaluation system: Improve according to the requirements of the evaluation. If you can't meet the requirements, it means that you and the environment are not suitable or there are limited opportunities here, so try to find a more suitable job. If you can meet the requirements, then just keep moving on.
Poor evaluation and disagree with the evaluation system: Don't give a shit, focus more on yourself (lower the priority of work output) and find a more suitable job. If you don't agree, there's no need to struggle or try to prove anything, think about the purpose of work. In reality, the impact of one performance evaluation is probably just one or two months of performance bonus, right?
